LD 37 Post Mortem

On the 37th Ludum Dare the theme was "One room", so we came up with an idea to create a tetris / platformer mashup. The game is called Syrtet an it's a platformer where you escape the one room and the only way out is the way to the top.

FIRST IDEAS & GAME CONCEPTS

  • Rogue like dungeon crawler
  • Top-Down Puzzler with multiple height levels
  • Combination of a Platformer and Tetris
  • Make use of the Unity Engine and its animation systems


FIRST DESIGN

  • Platformer with spawning blocks
  • Tetris implementation (grid, block shapes, spawner)
  • Enemy AI is spawning the Tetris blocks
  • Design was very different from the final version


ITERATIONS & NEW ART DESIGN

  • At the end of the first day the initial art design was scrapped
  • We managed to finalize the new style within 3-4 hours
  • The Platformer Aspect was almost done at this point


FINAL JAM VERSION

  • Gameloop is complete (Menu, Tutorial, Gameplay, Game Over)
  • Presentation came out pretty good
  • Gameplay could use some more iterations


PROBLEMS & OUR LEARNINGS

  • initial thoughts were good, but did work well in practice
  • Gameplay not satisfying
  • Balancing issues because of the two different gameplay aspects
  • Tetris part did took too much time and did not played out well in the final product
  • Smaller steps, more iterations and gameplay first
  • Better gameplay with more paper prototyping in the first place
